FREE resources to teach reading and phonics
There are many materials available to teach reading. While many paid programs and materials are good, there are also quality materials and resources offered for free. Insya’Allah I will keep on updating as I find more free resources.
Here is a list that I have compiled for easy reference:
Progressive Phonics
I absolutely love this site. Everything is totally free and the materials are easy to download in pdf format. You can use the lessons as a guide to help your child learn the alphabets and phonics.
Oxford Owl
Just sign up and you can get excess to their ebooks for free. The books are perfect for pre-readers and early readers who are beginning to decode words. Plus, they have a bunch of other teaching and learning resources for children. It is literally like a library of resources.
This Reading Mama
This blog has a lot of freebies related to reading which are fun and engaging. I still can’t believe most of the printables are free.
Phonemic Awareness Games
This website has ideas aided with videos, and printable materials to help build your child’s phonemic skills. It’s just a fancy word for teaching kids how to play with the sounds in the words they hear. These are essential skills before your child learns to read. Again. I can’t believe they offer it for free.
Reading Rockets
This is my go-to resource for reading. It has everything you need to know to teach kids reading, from how children learn to read, to games and ideas to teach rhyming words such as these.
